In October 2024, the Gambling Regulation Act 2024 was signed into law by the President. This allowed the establishment of Údarás Rialála Cearrbhachais na hÉireann, the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI), as an independent, statutory body responsible for regulating and licensing the gambling industry in Ireland.
The establishment of the GRAI is an important development in ensuring a well-regulated gambling sector in Ireland, while protecting the public from gambling harms. The new regulator will focus on public safety and wellbeing, cover gambling online and in person, and have powers to regulate advertising, gambling, websites, and apps.
The GRAI possesses essential enforcement powers to take appropriate and targeted action when providers do not adhere to the licensing terms, conditions, and regulations set forth by the Authority.
